The Difference

When most carpets look the same, how do you know you’re buying a quality carpet? Well, apart from the different quality fibre types such as wool or nylon, the greatest indicator of quality in a carpet is its “density”.
 

In simple terms, density means how many tufts of yarn there are in a given area of the carpet. A simple test of density is to part the tufts of the carpet pile in both directions (e.g. across the width and length of it). Look for the closeness of tufts across the width and also how close the rows of tufts are. The less of the backing you can see the better the density and the better the quality.

But how does density create better quality carpets? Well, the greater the density (the tighter the carpet pile), the better the durability of the carpet. Tufts that are close together will not flatten from foot traffic as easily and will keep liquid spills and soil particles nearer the surface for easier cleaning. A densely tufted carpet will not wear out as quickly and will show less footprints and vacuum cleaner marks than a thinner carpet will.
